OEM does not automatically mean quality – a real case study
A recent project reminded us once again that blindly relying on OEM originals does not always lead to the best outcome.
A customer approached us with a request to manufacture new shafts for the UNTHA RS 30 four-shaft shredder. Production was carried out according to original OEM specifications to ensure every detail matched.
However, once installed, the customer encountered an unexpected issue – the knives did not fit the shafts properly. To identify the cause, we asked the customer to supply OEM knives for direct measurement. The results confirmed that the problem was not in the shafts themselves:
📌 The internal bore dimensions of the OEM knives varied by up to ± 1.2 mm.
Such a wide tolerance range can cause:
- misalignment or installation difficulties
- excess play and premature wear
- uneven shredding performance
- increased operating costs
