Steel production in electric furnaces

Europe is becoming a world leader in the production of greener steel, building only electric arc furnaces. About half of the steel from new steel mills worldwide will be produced using electricity. According to the Global Steel Plant Tracker from 7/24/23, China is in 2nd place, Iran is in 3rd place, India is in 4th place, and the Philippines is 5th.

Steel production in electric furnaces

The replacement of two of the three furnaces with arc furnaces has been discussed for a long time in the U.S. Steel Košice steelworks in Slovakia. If steel mills started production in electric arc furnaces, they would achieve 63 percent less carbon dioxide emissions. European producers who switch to arc furnaces should benefit, especially if their production ends up in the domestic European market.
