Slovakia 🇸🇰 is among the leaders in plastic packaging recycling in the EU 🇪🇺

The recycling rate of plastic packaging in Slovakia reached 54.1%, which is significantly above the EU average.

 

Across the entire European Union, an average of 35.3 kg of plastic packaging waste per inhabitant was generated in 2023, of which approximately 14.8 kg was recycled. The average recycling rate of plastic packaging in the EU thus reached about 42%. In recent years, Slovakia has made remarkable progress. Just a decade ago, it was among the countries with lower recycling performance, but it has gradually moved into the top ranks in Europe. This improvement has been supported mainly by the introduction of the extended producer responsibility system and the expansion of separate waste collection.

These results show that a well-organized sorting system, responsible behavior from producers, and the active participation of the public can deliver real results. Recycling plastic packaging is also an important step toward more efficient use of resources and the development of a circular economy.
